Research initiatives

Microbiome Ecology and Food Chemistry for Human Health

This initiative aims at understanding and identifying the complex mechanisms that affect human physiology, health, and disease, by integrating the disciplines of food chemistry and toxicology, microbiology and chemistry.

Environmental Chemistry and Microbiology

This initiative aims at connecting the existing strong expertise and methodological repertoires in analytical and biological chemistry with those in molecular microbiology, physiology and ecosystem-wide biogeochemical process analytics to address a wide range of important environmental challenges.

Microbial Computational System Sciences  

This initiative joins existing expertise in microbial bioinformatics, microbial computational systems biology, and modeling of complex microbial systems, aiming at the development and application of novel computational methods in genomics, metagenomics and functional genomics, as well as model creation and simulation of molecular interactions in (micro)biological systems and ecosystems.

Metal-Based Anticancer Research

This initiative aims to apply nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry (NanoSIMS) to study the subcellular distribution of metal-based anticancer drugs in cell cultures and tissues, which will have implications for the understanding of mechanisms of action, toxicity and drug resistance.

Research Support Facility Cluster

To further develop the existing core facilities associated with the member departments the Mass Spectrometry Center and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Center at the Faculty of Chemistry team up with the Large Instrument Facility for Advanced Isotope Research (NanoSIMS and SILVER) at the Life Sciences Faculty, essentially forming the analytical backbone of the new research initiatives.
